Medical imaging, also known as diagnostic imaging or radiology, diagnoses
illness and injury through various technologies such as MRIs and CT scans.
HRRMC offers a discounted, cash-based pricing option for CT scans and MRIs,
for patients without insurance, limited insurance or high-deductible plans.

Below are the imaging tests offered at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
We offer advanced technology not often found at rural hospitals, including
Cardiac CT scans, 3D Digital Mammography, Breast and prostate MRI.
Computerized Tomography Scan (CT or CAT Scan)
A CT scanner combines a series of X-ray images taken from different angles
to produce cross-sectional images of the bone, blood vessels and soft
tissues inside your body with precise clarity. It has many uses including
examining people who may have suffered internal injuries from an accident
or other trauma.
The hospital has an 80-slice CT scanner with cardiac capabilities (pictured).
A cardiac CT enables us to take detailed pictures of the heart and its
blood vessels. Tests include a heart scan to determine a patient's coronary
calcium score, which indicates the risk of coronary artery disease. Click

Heart Scan brochure.
PET/CT Scanning
Now offered three days a month, PET/CT combines the fine anatomical detail
of a CT with PET's ability to detect changes in cell function. PET/CT
scans are performed three times a month at our hospital in Salida.

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast used to screen for breast disease.
It plays a key role in early breast cancer detection. HRRMC offers both
2D and 3D digital mammography.
Additionally, we can perform stereotactic breast biopsies.
This test uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images
of the organs and tissues inside your body. HRRMC now offers breast and
prostate MRIs.
We also have the capabilities to do conscious sedation with anesthesia
for MRIs when needed.
Ultrasound
This technology uses sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the
body. It helps visualize muscles, tendons and many internal organs. It
is also used to examine the fetus of a pregnant person. We have the capability
to perform breast and other organ biopsies.
Regular ultrasound exams can be performed at the main campus in Salida
as well as on Wednesdays and Fridays at the Buena Vista Health Center.
Echocardiogram
A type of ultrasound test that produces live images of your heart and allows
your physician to monitor how your heart and its valves are working.
Digital X-ray
An X-ray is a short, painless test that produces images of your bones and
other structures inside your body. For some types of X-rays, a contrast
medium such as iodine or barium is introduced into your body to enhance
the image detail.
Digital X-rays are available at the health centers in Buena Vista, Salida,
Saguache, South Park (Fairplay) and Custer County (Westcliffe).
Bone Density Scan (DEXA Scan)
A bone density scan uses X-rays to find out how many grams of calcium and
other bone minerals are packed into a segment of bone. It helps diagnose
if you have osteoporosis--a disease that causes bones to become more fragile
and break.
Nuclear Medicine
This technology uses small amounts of radioactive material to obtain images
of organs and study body functions. It is used to diagnose many types
of cancer, heart disease, and many other disorders.
