Natural gas shut off to hospital and Hwy. 50 clinic

A natural-gas pipeline was ruptured this morning near Poncha Springs, and natural-gas service to Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center and the HRRMC Medical Clinics on Hwy. 50 in Salida was shut off.

Xcel Energy is working to restore service, but HRRMC has been informed that natural-gas service will not be restored until tomorrow, April 11. Hot water and heat are not available at the hospital and clinic.

The hospital has taken the following measures:

  • The hot-serving line in the hospital cafeteria will be closed tonight. Salad bar and grab-and-go will be available for dinner. A cold continental breakfast will be served tomorrow morning.
  • Scheduled surgeries for tomorrow morning, April 11, will be rescheduled until the natural gas is restored.
  • Portable electric heaters will be installed in occupied patient rooms and the Emergency Department.
