Modern collage exhibit by Howard artist Emilia Van Nest Markovich now on display at HRRMC
SALIDA, Colo.— A collection of unique collage prints from Howard-based artist Emilia Van Nest Markovich are now on display at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center (HRRMC) through September 30 of this year.
Van Nest Markovich created the collection by layering monotypes (a unique print first painted on another surface and transferred to paper which cannot be replicated), chalk pastel and painted papers to create a rich texture and surface. These layers are then recombined with gold leaf drawings integrated into the layers, creating entirely new, one-of-a-kind collages.
This series of Van Nest Markovich’s work was inspired by a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico for the Dia De Los Muertos celebration.
“The use of collage is part of my working practice, which centers around constructing meaning through many pieces interacting together, creating a cohesive, final piece of work,” explains Van Nest Markovich. “I was able to experience the rich traditions associated with this celebration, which inspired the monotypes and carved stamps and drawings I created with color, patterns, and mark making.”
Van Nest Markovich holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM; and a Master’s degree in Art from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO. She was an art educator for more than 30 years, and has participated in numerous exhibitions across the United States, including exhibits throughout Colorado, New Mexico and Illinois. Van Nest Markovich also maintains a studio in Howard, CO, where she works on a variety of collages, monoprints, pastels and paintings.
HRRMC displays the work of regional artists each quarter, with an emphasis on the Arkansas Valley. Call 719-530-2217 for more information on exhibiting art at HRRMC.
