New general surgeon joins hospital medical staff

Salida, Colorado - Jerry Smith, D.O., has joined Surgical Specialists of Colorado and began a full-time general/trauma surgery practice at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center on October 8. He joins Dr. Karen Johnson as a second full-time general surgeon in Salida.

Dr. Smith and his wife, Susan, relocated to Salida from Grand Forks, N.D. He is board certified in general surgery and has been in practice since 1988.

Dr. Smith earned his osteopathic medical degree from Oklahoma State University. He completed his medical training at Oklahoma State University Medical Center and the University of North Texas Health Science Center. He also holds a doctorate in biology from the University of North Texas.

Over the years, Dr. Smith has volunteered on numerous surgical missions to Kenya and Guatemala and taught medical students in Maine and Missouri. Prior to becoming a physician, Dr. Smith was a biology professor.
